![]() ![]() FACT! All food products contain hormones – these are chemical messengers which after consumption are broken down during the digestive process – even celery contains hormones!!! There are NEVER any hormones added to milk. A common reason stated for changing milk to a dairy free option is they have heard that there are hormones in milk. However, in the past few years the media have created a lot of confusion and misinformation about milk, where it comes from, and what is added to it. Milk is one of the most nutrient-rich choices to consume in your diet. Although the benefits have not been fully proved, wearing loose-fitting underwear, reducing sitting, avoiding saunas and hot tubs, and limiting scrotum exposure to warm objects, such as a laptop, might enhance sperm quality. The traditional definition of milk is ‘‘whitish fluid, rich in fat and protein, secreted by mammary glands of female mammals for the nourishment of their young, and taken from cows, sheep, etc., as an article of human diet’’ Increased scrotal temperature can hamper sperm production. For example, wear protective clothing, use protective equipment, such as safety goggles, and avoid skin contact with chemicals. If you must work with toxins, do so safely. Exposure to pesticides, lead and other toxins can affect sperm quantity and quality. Anabolic steroids and other illicit drugs can have the same effect. Calcium channel blockers, tricyclic antidepressants, anti-androgens, opioids and other medications can contribute to fertility issues. Talk to a health care provider about medications. If necessary, consider using mineral oil, canola oil, mustard oil or a fertility-friendly lubricant, such as Pre-Seed. While further research is needed on the effects of lubricants on fertility, consider avoiding lubricants during intercourse. For healthy adults, that means up to one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men. ![]() If you choose to drink, do so in moderation. Heavy drinking can lead to reduced testosterone production, impotence and decreased sperm production. If you smoke, ask your doctor to help you quit. Men who smoke cigarettes are more likely to have low sperm counts. ![]() Sperm can be especially vulnerable to environmental factors, such as exposure to excessive heat or toxic chemicals. This is not as important a factor as sperm quantity or movement. Typical sperm have oval heads and long tails, which work together to propel them. Pregnancy is possible with less than 40% of the sperm in ejaculate moving, but 40% is considered the threshold. To reach and fertilize an egg, sperm must move - wriggling and swimming through a female cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes. Too little sperm in an ejaculation might make it more difficult to get pregnant because there are fewer candidates available to fertilize the egg. Fertility is most likely if the semen discharged in a single ejaculation (ejaculate) contains at least 15 million sperm per milliliter. Sperm health depends on various factors, including quantity, movement and structure: The penis ejaculates semen during sexual intercourse. Fluid from the seminal vesicles and prostate gland combine with sperm to make semen. The male reproductive system makes, stores and moves sperm. ![]()
